Been a long time!!! So great that you guys are putting these out again. I was listening to the podcast this morning and was like, "wait a second, wasn't I Mega Matt?" I don't think I hear a saxophone in this one either, but I must have been talking about the Ending Theme from the SNES version. ReplyDeleteSo grateful for another episode! It kind of blew my mind to hear the Golvellius track played after all this time, especially since it was my error.
ReplyDeleteJosh's "I'm sorry there is no god" comment made me laugh. I haven't studied Japanese for over 20 years, but those memories are still some of my favorite...like the time when I had to use the restroom, and we weren't allowed to use English, but they hadn't taught us any words for 'restroom' yet. I asked, "Sumimasen kedo, Boku ikimasu ka?" The teacher responded, "Ah, doko ikimasu ka?" I repeated my phrase and she repeated her phrase. Just then I remembered a part of the subbed vhs of Appleseed, where the bad guy gets up to leave, and they ask him where he was going. "To the toilet", the subtitles read.
So I responded with that phrase: "benzyō da", in exactly the low-pitched, cavalier tone from the anime. The Japanese TA's cheeks immediately turned bright pink, like she was part of a Tenchi Muyo episode. Laughing nervously, she replied, "Danieruzu-San! Very informal! Go! Go!"
When I returned, she made a point of teaching the class the proper, formal way of asking to use the toilet.
...another time, we were practicing conversations around being offered alcohol. Since we were encouraged to improvise, I thought instead of saying "itadakimasu", I'd say "Kampai"...but I blanked and instead blurted out, "BANZAIII!" Before drinking. More embarrassed laughter and pink strips under the eyes.

Delete....yes, the Golvellius requests were from me. The "Medieval Times" reference was the name of the episode in which said request originally occurred.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of a VGMJB Discord, comments with a caveat: firstly, OH MY YES I would love to see that. At first I was like, "yes", but then when you mentioned group listens, my yes went to "OH HECK YEAH MOST AWESOME THING EVER". And the community has always been one of the greatest parts of VGMJB.
Now the caveat: While my above comment on The VGMJB community is true, one of the particulars that made VGMJB so unique is that it came out at a time when online communication was accelerated from what it had been prior, BUT there was still a buffer of sorts that limited some of the less productive elements of internet communication we see today. You hosts would read our emails, and could provide a layer of filtration between those emails and our communication with each other. It helped round off the roughest edges of communication. I myself was the recipient of some of that smoothing, and I'm thankful for it. I remember specifically a very kind, generous email I received from one of you that helped me shift my tone, when someone less kind might have (rightly) said, "You know Nemo, you're really coming off as an @$$hole, and you're gonna have to cool it or leave".
There is no similar buffer with Discord. Patrons have always been super cool and supportive, and I'd hope they would be the same in Discord as they are on the blog and in emails. For my own part, learning from past mistakes, I'll just say that I'd rather remove myself from a prospective VGMJB server than be cause of strife and....discord.
