Ep. 75: Strawberry Anniversary

Well patrons, we did it. It's been two whole years since The VGM Jukebox podcast hit the airwaves, and it's time to get the whole family together to celebrate. Eat a truckload of candy, spin around for thirty seconds, and enjoy the 100x multiplier as the parade floats roll by. Since this is a super long episode, be sure to pace yourself halfway through by reflecting on the beautiful impermanence of the moment before diving back in for more tunes, tales, and the lengthy conclusion of Reading the Runes. Thank you to everyone for all your support, recommendations, conversations, observations, and felicitations. Congratulations!

  1. TARNYA is the alias of former SEGA sound member Chikako Kamatani. Her notable works include Alex Kidd and the Enchanted Castle and Mystic Defender.

  2. I think the Texas Instruments SN76489 sound chip in the Master System and Game Gear has kind of an endearing sound to me. I feel like with the limitations of that chip (3 square waves and 1 noise generator) composers were able to do wonders with it (i.e, Yuzo Koshiro's score for Sonic the Hedgehog)

I wish you guys a happy anniversary and hope you guys share music for many years to come!

    1. BTW, I too was worried that I was sending so many tracks and possibly overloading the jukebox, but hearing this episode kinda calmed those fears. (Emily, how is me playing on drums ironic? I'm curious.)

I'm happy to be fueling the jukebox with some great game music!

    2. Oh, only ironic in the sense that with a name like "electricboogaloo" I'd've expected you on electric bass or something.

Maybe we'll invest in tiny should-sling amplifiers for next year's parade.

    3. ^ That's "shoulder-sling." Pardon my neuron misfires.

    4. Electric Boogaloo is actually pop-and-lock style of dance that originated from a street dance crew from the 70s,who themselves named after a James Brown song!

To be honest, I did name myself after Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo because well sequel titles are funny sometimes! Just find it interesting that the name relates to music in some way!

    5. Maybe save a spot for a flash mob for next year's parade!

  3. Emily, your account of how you finished Ultima IV sounds like a true version of the hero's tale. This game has the reputation of being incredibly difficult, and you went through to the end without cutting any corners, seeking to cultivate virtue to the fullest extent. Even so, the final dungeon took more than you had to give. Other Emily totally had it right; true heroes need help too. And the lesson you learned about pride was that secret key self-realization the hero always needs to tap into their true potential and save the day.

It also touched on another element to the true hero story that I like: That in real life, the hero never comes out unscathed. That feeling of deflation after the fact came about because you had a very set idea of how you wanted to complete the game. You still saved the day and became the Avatar, but not exactly how you wanted to do it. But I think the lessons learned from the sum total of time and effort you put into the quest equal more than any hubristic sense you might have received had you crushed that last dungeon on your own terms. It was a great journey, one that took everything you had to give. And you learned to rely on others at the expense of your ego. Richard Garriott would be proud of you, Avatar Emily.

  4. Grand Marshall Wicked Sephiroth, awesome job! You really put a lot of effort into V.2, and it really shows! The second verse is really cool, and like Emily, I love the singing parts. Well played, Sir!

So I kinda cheated the system with my request. I have long loved the Silent Fog track; it brings about the feels soo much! I love its somber tone, lack of percussion and instrument choices that sound more like the PC-98 than the Mega Drive. But it is so long that I felt it would be overly self-indulgent, and not likely to be selected, so I never requested it.

Then I found the secret warp pipe to the VGMJB mailbox, and I figured I'd take advantage of your pledge to play any mailed request. Sorry! And Josh, hopefully my cartoon wasn't too creepily accurate....It's not too difficult to guess that a dude with a broken leg is going to play an iPhone game whilst laying on a couch, but I have to confess I DID check out a few YouTube vids to get your likeness better.

And it's Utopia Nemo; you guys have always gotten it right. So how are you enjoying S&S? Or not?

    1. I like S&S pretty good, but since it's such an immersive experience, I don't put it on that often. Also, I think I'm waiting for a certain moon phase?

I was truly delighted by the likeness. Thanks, U.N.

    2. Hey Josh,

You were talking about mobile games you've been playing during your recovery, may I suggest Pinball Arcade? it's an app that has recreations of real pinball tables. Even though I mostly play it on PS4, I do play it on my phone whenever there's a table that isn't on the console versions yet. It does give you free tables that rotate every month so it does make a good time waster.

I'm glad the leg's healing well and hope for a full recovery!

  5. Oh hey, I also submitted that Quartet tune :) I might have listed it under a different track name though!

    1. Yeah, I think the track is actually named "Quartet Theme" in the CD soundtrack release {http://vgmdb.net/album/4167} and it plays on mutiple stages in the game.

      BTW, I found these remixes of the Master System tracks on YouTube, I wonder if you've heard them before {https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjLgnU3kfcc}

Thanks for getting a Quartet track in here Alienjesus, that whole soundtrack's a blast to listen to.

  6. I truly enjoyed watching the parade with everybody.

At my town's real life 4th of July parade a couple weeks ago, I observed everyone passing out candy in an underhand "bowling" motion. I think this must be a policy to prevent unintentional injuries.

  7. Happy 2 Year Anniversary! I love the confetti gif on the download button. So festive! Hypeness!

The parade was a joy. I'm surprised I made 2nd highest recommender, but what the patrons don't know is that after I finished my Mahjong major, I dumped a ton of recommendations, like so many falling tiles, of nothing but Mahjong tracks. There is enough Mahjazz for years to come.

  9. I had completely forgotten about the drawing I made Josh on the couch with the Gogolithic Mass behind him. Ironically, I have no way to see that drawing (or DO I????). And that Quartet track! Quartet may have been the first game I saw at my local 7-11, the venerable establishment that introduced me to Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon, Shinobi, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and molten cheese nachos.
