Ep. 51: Bubble Bauble Challenge

A few weeks ago the patrons were tasked with submitting the cutest, bubbliest video game tunes they could think of... and they delivered! Join Josh and Emily as they play the entries in the Bubble Bauble Challenge and hand out awards for each one. But wait, wasn't Emily supposed to be on vacation this month? Technically yes -- but when she and Josh wound up serendipitously running into each other in California under totally random and definitely unplanned circumstances, they couldn't turn down the opportunity to record their first live episode of VGMJB. If you can manage the hum of traffic in the background and the bizarre recording quality, you won't want to miss it either!

  1. FOUL! I demand a recount! Little did I know that when you asked for cute songs, you not only wanted bubbly cute, but ALSO wanted a song that elicited the lilting pangs of wistfulness from the Katamari Damacy track. There were a few tracks, mine included(pronounced "Win-Nose") which I still maintain were more bubbly......but yeah, "Our Mojipittan" takes the cake for lilting wistfulness.

Incidentally, I've never played Winnose, and I only looked at gameplay when it came time to submit the track. It truly looks like poo. But the music is really good. You want wistful? Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzb_5fNBkzY

I'm glad you guys liked the gifts. I did not clean the 6-button up, but I spent a bit of time zip-tying that cord. That came from Retro Game Trader, which is probably the coolest games store in the area. They take good care of their stuff. And Josh, if you didn't already know, I was and am a huge Sega kid/"grown-up". I also had the SMS instead of an NES, so I know exactly how you felt when you first flipped through that book.

    1. I forgot to mention the Christmas card.....I'm a decent illustrator but a terrible colorist. So there it is. I hope you were able to tell that I was plugging the 6-button and the headphones into HAJU.........

    2. You're right that you were cheated, Nathan, but what nobody could have anticipated was the way that the concept of "bubbliness" would have been best represented in the fragility of a human soul. Them's the breaks. Thanks again for the gift! And for the Youtube link. Now that is a bubble that is ready to break.

  3. This first international Cute-Off competition was amazing and so much fun! I am well versed in the science of cuteness and all of these songs ranked high on JT's Standardized Metric of Objective Cutability, Happiness and Adorableness (aka the SMOOCHA index). I hope we get another round of this competition with a fresh batch of contenders because all of these songs were a joy.

That being said, I think Dating Start! got robbed! That song's cuteness was off the charts and has more adorbs per ounce than has ever been previously recorded in the cuteness research literature. Undertale clearly should have been awarded the golden scepter to cutie town.

This episode also reminded me of James Corden's Carpool Karaoke and I think it would be awesome if you guys made a video where you picked up special guests to vgm karaoke with you. Also, there's something inexplicably funny to me about the fact that this episdoe included a trip to Del Taco. haha. I really want a bean and cheese burrito with Del Scorcho sauce now.

    1. Dating Start is great, but it also seems a bit ready for business, if you know what I mean.

You have no idea how much those bean and cheese burritos occupy my everyday thoughts. I think my heaven is one where I poke a hole in the bottom of a Del Taco Bean and Cheese burrito and the liquid never stops flowing.

  4. That Winnose track is SO good! The vocals are overloaded with cuteness. But I think it rocks a little too hard to be a win the bauble. Hyperdimension Neptunia a might be my favorite track, though. Not only is it super cute, but it reminds me of that classic Dance Dance Revolution J-pop/J-Eurobeat sound. It would feel right at home blasting out of a DDR cab while I stomp away like a fool.

Great episode all around, and honestly, I'd be down for more car episodes!

    1. Glad to hear the weird audio wasn't too much for you. We'd be down to do more carcast episodes too. Hopefully Emily and I can end up on the same coast more often!
