Ep. 42: Safe Space

This week we enter a safe space as Josh continues to explore his Japanese half, Emily admits her weirdest video game character crush, and both hosts solve the mystery of Link's continual incarnation in each Legend of Zelda game. Also, the Halloween VGM Music Box Contest is nigh! Emily plays a clip of a VGM music box arrangement and it's up to YOU to figure out which Halloweeny game it's from. The first patron to call it on any VGMJB social media channel wins -- so get listening, and start guessing!

  1. Now I can't decide if my band name should be Jacuzzi Victory or Evolutionary Regret.

Emily, with your love for disembodied artificial intelligences, you should really see the Spike Jonze movie "Her." It deals with that topic better than anything else I have seen.

My wife plays Pokémon Go while we walk and Josh's comments and tips on battling helped us win our first gym today! Woot woot!

Also, much thanks for the YU-NO recommendation! Great track, and not something I would have likely encountered on my own as eroge titles are not really my thing.

    2. I don't think I've ever even seen an eroge, but YU-NO is my favorite find from my new hobby of perusing VGMrips.net for awesome music. I've heard so much great music from that site that I would never have encountered had I not been directed there by Bryan from Pixelated Audio. And there are about 85 tracks in that OST! So good. If you check out he OST, also give a listen to FANKY TANG. Another classic.

    3. ....oh, and I should mention that it wasn't just the "emotional tone" that is reminiscent of the SOR intro track.....the PC-88/98 both use PSG like the Genesis, and Other World 1 has a very similar square sine lead to that SOR track.

    4. @HAJ: She did collect the coins, then tried to hold that gym for 21 hours. There was just 1 min 20 seconds left to go when someone else bumped her from her gym spot. She was so mad.

It's crazy how many people play Pokemon Go here in Seattle. There are gyms everywhere and they are constantly full of high power players (Level > 30). We've taken a few other gyms since that first one, and most are beaten again within a couple of hours. We even thought we were being smart the other night and took over two gyms in the park just before it closed so that our collection timer would run its course and be ready in the morning. This park has locked gates at night to prevent pedestrians and cars from getting in and you can't reach the gyms without walking for a few minutes into the park. Someone still bumped our gym late at night, which means they had to have parked in the neighborhood, then jumped a fence to illegally get in to the park and take the gyms.

@Nathan Daniels: Thanks for the Fanky Tang recommendation. I've only listened to a little so far, but I like what I've heard. :)
