Ep. 12: Over the Rainbow

Things get a little slippery as Josh, Emily, and the patrons get together for a little holiday gathering to discuss a particular brand of rainbow-colored coal they’ve found in their stockings. In the process, Emily finds one patron’s testimonial so funny that she can barely keep it together. Sneak away from your other festivities for the final jukebox hangout of 2015 and bask in the glow of some last-minute JAMS.

  1. This isn't completely relevant to the show, but speaking of "safe" spaces in music, for typically less 'acceptable' sounds: I stumbled upon a video a while ago of Frank Zappa on the Steve Allen Show, from 1963. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MewcnFl_6Y ). It's a pretty entertaining segment, but the music starts at the 12:00 time stamp. I'm always curious about seemingly arbitrarily structured, or achromatic music.
With the Genesis sound architecture specifically, I often wonder if composers were at all compelled to be more daring with their work on the system because it was, ostensibly, a mini synthesizer, where the possible sounds were virtually limitless. The Genesis' sound capabilities often seem to be seen as limiting, but I feel that they can be simultaneously interpreted as very liberating.

    1. I echo your thoughts on this. Indeed, the sound quality of the Genesis lies in the hands of the composer. Some Genesis tracks are fat, and warm. Some sound like bare electrical wires. The more talented the composer, the more liberated they are to feel, it seems.

  2. Happy Holidays! Hopefully Saint Nick brought his Retro counterpart something to make up for all of those terrible JLN games. Love that Waterworld track.

  3. I just finished listening to this episode, and I am so tickled that Emily found my story so funny. It totally made my day!
On a side note, that same video store where I rented NES games from, padded out its rental stock with many unlicensed games. Some of which are pretty sought after today. Camerica, Color Dreams, Wisdom Tree, Tengen, Exidy, and probably a few others.
That Chiller box art used to give me...chills.

    1. You should have heard our first attempt at your testimony, Retro Nick -- I literally had tears streaming down my face. I kinda wish we'd recorded that one, but I still managed to get misty-eyed and stuffy on this second round despite how hard I was trying to stay in one piece!

      Hahaha. Just too funny.

  7. Hi guys! Thought I already posted regarding the WW track but I must have been dreaming. "Does Nathanakautopianemo actually dream of the VGM Jukebox?", you may be wondering. The answer is no. I dream about posting in the comments section of The VGM Jukebox. What does that say about me? "Who cares", he said in the third person.

*Ahem* regarding WW, I should have been more clear in my testimonial. WW was done by Ocean, not LJN. My point was that LJN was SO synonymous with stinky turds marketed as movie-based games, that they tainted the VERY IDEA of playing a movie-based game. Would you taste the rainbow? You wouldn't, because somewhere over that rainbow lies a leprechaun. And it's actually the Warwick Davis variety. And he's not actually lying, he's standing. He's just short, and he wants to kill you. Kill you with Jaws, and Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street, Back to the Future, Karate Kid, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Warlock, and so on.

I hope I cleared that up. Remember, friends don't let friends play LJN.
